| September 29 (day 12) Hills to Laredo | Back to Latest News | ||
Bilbao - Laredo After a wonderful feast at breakfast with every conceivable option available we all started the day with full stomachs. The first steep hill was added to by a road cleaner, coming the other way, spraying water at us and causing much confusion. Warren discovered that he had a bald spot on his tyre so he spent all day cautiously going down hill at the same speed he went up. The hills increased in severity so the tandem team got further and further behind though got there in the end. The scenery was absolutely stunning and, once we'd risen above the industrial strength smog of the busy roads, the air was very nice to breath. Drama of the day was supplied by Warren when he got a wasp caught in his top. Luckily he escaped un-stung after managing to stop and rapidly remove his helmet and shirt, the only casualty being that of a banana that sadly flew out of his pocket and into the nearby hedge. After a mile and a half descent, which unfortunately needs to be cycled back up tomorrow, we arrived at our destination Laredo. This is a lovely town indeed and only 33 miles from Santander - the end of our two week adventure. Man of the day was most certainly Brian for not only managing to guide the tandem up all the hills today but for his sterling work in scribing all the news stories.
